I came home tonight to a new development in the front yard... the hedgerow. The edible theme from the back yard is now being extended to the front, and what better replacement for the dreadful old falling-over fence than a loose hedge of hazelnuts, roses, herbs and a quince?
Kaye, from Grow From Here, is in charge of the plants and planting. There is nothing I would like more than to do this myself, but I leave the house in the dark, and get home in the dark these days (all photos shot in the dark, sorry). And I know Kaye will give this garden the same love as I would--and a measure more creativity. There are some crazy looking hellebore-pom-pom flowers out there, and a number of other plants I've never seen before. Yay.
Here's the old fence.
And I know this is an absolutely terrible shot, but in a few months, I will be picking nuts and fruit from this border. There's an almond tree at the bottom, to give us some height at the front and some stunning spring blossoms.
Meanwhile on the other side of the yard, the new steps are set and we can walk on them. And... the shed is taking shape. Slowly, but surely.
It looks a bit alarming from this angle, but from the street and next door, it's really quite discrete...
When it's painted and has a kiwifruit or passionfruit vine growing over it, it will be pretty much invisible.
I'm so excited about how this front yard is progressing. Tonight I got a taste (and a whiff) of what it will be like to walk slowly up to the house, brushing past fragrant herbs, picking a handful of something to eat. I wanted this front yard to be a journey, and now I really can taste and smell it.
Woo hoo such fun Cannot wait for the hedge to leaf up and bear fruit
