I know, it's easy to snort and raise an eyebrow. But give this front yard three more weeks and I guarantee it will be the wonder of the street. It probably already is the wonder of the street (think scratching of heads) with its retaining wall of coffee sacks. Let me explain.
These beautiful coffee sacks are anchored securely into the clay wall, covering the ivy roots that appear to be holding the whole front yard up. They will be filled with potting mix, and planted with an assortment of edible plants. Permanent residents like rosemary, thyme, sage (hopefully), mint, comfrey, rhubarb and friends, which will put their roots down deep into the bank and take over the retaining job. In among them will be the seasonal salad plants... this is the salad bar of the garden, so I'm imagining tumbler tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuces, arugala and the like.
In a couple of months, we will walk past this cliff on the way home from work, and pick bits of our dinner. I can feel it and smell it. Really.
This front yard adventure has required more than your average imagination, but I have heaps of that, and I have no doubt we're in for a front yard so delightful it will rival the back yard.
This looks so exciting! I love the idea of a "salad wall" - your neighbours must be so envious :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Mika. I think the neighbours are a tiny bit sceptical... and I can't blame them. But I really can see this whole wall loaded with things to eat. One tomatillo has germinated... I'll have some more going shortly. Keep you posted about that.
ReplyDeleteLove the way this is unfolding. It's going to be a dream come true soon!
